COVID May 1

Members of CUPE Local 358

Good Afternoon!

We hope this message finds everyone in good health!

Due to COVID-19, all Local meetings continue to be on hold.  The business of the local has carried on through the use of video and teleconferencing.  It has its issues, but for the most part has been a good tool to keep things moving forward.  We will see how things play out over the coming weeks.  Potentially could it be used for general or unit meetings of the Local?  Hopefully it won’t come to that, but with potential bargaining this fall for several units, we may have to see if it is feasible.

COVID-19 is affecting everything we do.  Its effects are many – and different for each 358 unit.  Some have seen layoffs, redeployments, venue closures, modified Standard Operating Procedures, workplace modifications (the kitchen table for some?)  – just to name a few of the issues.  Some members have been hit hard and their lives have been upturned dramatically during the pandemic.

We are here to help!  If you have any issues or questions, please contact your Shop Steward.  The Shop Stewards are all listed on our website – look under the “Contact Us” tab for your unit.

Alternatively, you could send an email and we can point you in the right direction.

Another victim of COVID-19 is the CUPE 358 Annual Golf Tournament.  Initially, thoughts were that the tournament could be a great event coming out of the pandemic.  But it appears, with Social Distancing and other pandemic related issues continuing, we just won’t be able to pull it off 5 weeks from now.  The golf course confirmed with us this week that, sadly, the tournament should be cancelled.  The Good and Welfare Committee will be keeping an eye on things looking for alternatives down the road that could benefit the membership.

The information is changing all the time.  But please see the below document for links and information on available assistance for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Take care everyone!

On behalf of the Executive,

Tod LeSergent
